Beach Relocation - Unfortunately, South Shore Beach has regularly ranked amongst the worst beaches in the nation. As recently as 2022, it experienced 27 closures related to poor water quality. Members of the Friends of South Shore Park provided input at public engagement meetings with representatives from Milwaukee County. The project will convert the existing beach to greenspace, and the rocky shoreline to the south into a sandy swimming area. Construction is anticipated to start in October 2024 and is estimated to run through spring 2025. For more information, please see -

​Playground - South Shore Park Playground is one of the most highly utilized playgrounds in Milwaukee County. ​Due to its heavy usage, it is in need of significant repair, and ideally replacement. Community support was essential to get a large-scale project like this approved by the County. Friends of South Shore Park advocated and raised funds for the project through the Fund Play Bay View Campaign (www.fundplaybayview.com).

The playground rebuild is in the approved county budget. The Milwaukee County Parks department now oversees design and construction of the project. Design started in 2024. For more information, please see -

Education - We host several hundred students from our community each year for an Earth Day Education event. This event features a series of environmental education sessions.

Past Projects - We are proud to recognize many accomplishments including advocating for Park Pavilion improvements, reconstruction of the breakwater and Oak Leaf trail, the South Shore Parking Lot reconstruction, as well as rain gardens and native plantings in the park.
