1. Tree Replacement Campaign
The Need – South Shore Park, like all outdoors spaces, has many trees to storms, age and the Emerald Ash Borer. We estimate our park has lost approximately 100 trees since 2009! .
The Goal - The Friends of South Shore Park (FOSSP) is starting a campaign to replace the lost trees and establish a stronger canopy. Our goal is to plant 50 trees, with the first phase of planting in fall 2024.
Already donated – The incredible South Shore Farmers’ Market provided a generous donation of $3,000!! On March 22nd, Healium Hot Yoga hosted FOSSP for a donation based Karma class, which raised $360! Keep an eye for this event to be held every year!
Sponsor or Dedicate a Tree – While we are seeking donations of any amount, donors may choose to honor or celebrate a special person, group or occasion at the following levels:
$340 for an entire tree
$170 for a half tree
$85 for a quarter tree.
How to donate – Donations can be made online at www.fossp.org through the “Donate” page on the main menu. You can also look for us on select Saturdays at the South Shore Farmers’ Market for more information and ways to donate.
2. Earth Education Day
On May 2nd, FOSSP hosted our 27th Annual Earth Education Day for local elementary students. Over 300 students from Clement, Fernwood, and Trowbridge schools walked to the park to learn about our environment and their place in it. An incredible group of presenters educated the students with interactive sessions during the day. Beevangelists shared their knowledge about the value and science of bees. Milwaukee County Native Areas discussed the benefits and beauty of native plants and wildlife. Hawthorn Glen Education Center presented on Wisconsin reptiles. Ocean Connections discussed the threats to our water ways. Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District hosted sessions about water treatment. Wisconsin DNR Fisheries led clinics on how to cast a fishing line. Friends of South Shore Park hosted a tree walk through the park. Planting trees has been a long standing Earth Day tradition. At the Earth Education Day event, we planted two trees with Milwaukee County Parks. Students on the tree walk wrote their name on a piece of paper and placed it in the freshly dug hole with a new tree. Thanks to a very generous donation from founding FOSSP members and Earth Day advocates, Kathy and Frank Mulvey, this tradition will carry on for many years.
Many thanks to our Presenters and Volunteers at the event, pictured from left to right: Frank (FOSSP), Cary (FOSSP), Kathy (FOSSP), Kevin (MMSD), Eric (MMSD), Eunice (FOSSP), Tom (FOSSP), Sue (FOSSP), Barbara (FOSSP), Nancy (FOSSP), Brian (Hawthorn Glen), Charlie (BeeVangelists), Jeff (Milwaukee County Parks), Julia (Hawthorne Glen), Brittany (Ocean Connections), Rebecca (Milwaukee County Natural Areas), Tim (WDNR Fisheries, not pictured), and Kurt (FOSSP, not pictured).
3. 2023 Park Clean Ups
In the 2023 Park Clean Up season, FOSSP collected 1,009 pounds of litter, trash, and washed up debris from South Shore Park. That's half a ton of trash removed from our park, beaches, and Lake Michigan!! We saved straws and lids from each clean up to make a trash art project during the Earth Education Day event. Pictured here is a little over half of the 15 gallons of straws and caps collected.
4. Volunteer Opportunities
Weekly Park and Beach Clean Ups - We're at it again this year. Please consider helping out this summer. Your help for even one hour will make difference! Clean ups occur every Wednesday (except July 3rd), 5:30-6:45pm, now through October. Meet at the large anchor off the northeast corner of the park pavilion. We have buckets and pickers, we just need you!
Tree Mulching Interest – To protect the health of our younger trees, we need to mulch. Milwaukee County Parks will supply the mulch and we’ll supply to volunteers! Please reach out if you are interested in participating in a mulching volunteer event. There will be multiple opportunities this summer.
5. South Shore Farmers’ Market - For more than 25 years, the market features farm fresh and local food from over 40 regional vendors, a full slate of music from diverse, homegrown talent, and opportunities to connect with friends and neighbors in the park. The market is open Saturdays from 8 am to Noon, through late-October. For more information, please visit – www.southshorefarmersmarket.com
